Living Beatitudes Community

Lenton Discussions 2010

Have you ever wondered what Jesus thought about the State? What about Paul? Is he really some social conservative that abhorred women and gays? What about Christians in the twenty first century? How are we to cope with Empire? This Lent come and join Living Beatitudes Community as David Wheeler-Reed (University of Dayton) takes us on a journey through the anti-imperial politics of the New Testament. Discover how Jesus took on the Roman Empire and how Paul and the Book of Revelation called for the overthrow of a tyrannical system that oppressed the masses. Come and discover what Christians today are called to do about Empire and how we can save Christianity from modern forms of imperialism.

David Wheeler-Reed is finishing his PhD at the University of Toronto. He currently teaches at the University of Dayton. He has written several articles on the New Testament and Imperialism, and he has received several awards for his academic and popular work including the Catholic Biblical Association’s award for outstanding Catholic scholar and Morris Dees award for his peace activism.

The series will be held on six consecutive Tuesday evenings in Lent beginning at 6:00 p.m., (February 16th, 23rd, March 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd.). The evenings will begin with soup and bread followed by a presentation by David Wheeler-Reed and discussion.
